FIFA refuses technological aid in football

FIFA ends all goal-line technology experiments
Goal-line technology to determine whether a goal has been scored will not be used in football for the foreseeable future, the game's law-makers ruled on Saturday.

FIFA, world soccer's governing body, will not sanction any further experiments into technological aids, and according to Brian Barwick, the chief executive of the English FA who supported the experiments, "the idea is now dead in the water".

Instead, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the game's ultimate law-making body, gave its approval for experiments to start this year with an additional assistant referee placed behind each goal to help the referee rule on contentious decisions.
Barwick said at a news conference after the IFAB's annual meeting: "We are very disappointed. We were in favour of goal-line technology. But it is dead in the water. There will be no more experiments and it will not be back on the agenda next year -- or in the foreseeable future."

IFAB, formed in 1886, determines the laws of the game and comprises delegates from the four British associations and four from FIFA. Proposals need a three-quarter-majority vote to be approved.
The proposal for goal-line technology was defeated by a 5-3 vote with the four FIFA votes and one from Wales outweighing England, Scotland and Northern Ireland who were in favour.

Jerome Valcke, FIFA's general secretary, said experiments using the additional linesmen would take place in either a UEFA or FIFA tournament later this year.

The IFAB had been considering two technological systems: a "smart" ball with a microchip developed by Adidas and the German company Cairos, and a camera-based system developed by the Hawkeye company whose system is used in tennis and cricket.

After making a presentation to the Board on Saturday and then being told of their decision, Hawkeye's managing director Paul Hawkins said: "I am absolutely stunned by their decision.

"It is completely out of the blue. A year ago they met and gave us four criteria to meet and we have met all of them, yet they have kicked it out now.

"A lot of money has been invested, a lot of time and effort and I am staggered."

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has long been against using technology.

Welsh FA general secretary David Collins said: "We believe football is a game played by human beings, it's a game with a human face and there was a feeling it would hinder the flow of the game."





This really is stupidity to the extreme. A small chip inside the ball or a small camera attached to the goal posts would reduce the number of wrongly disallowed goals, but even such a simple bit of technology is unwelcome?

Why does FIFA refuse to embrace technology even though it would clearly benefit the game? The excuse that football is a game for human beings, is really a crap excuse. Are ice hockey or tennis (two examples of sports that have long embraced technology as help for referees) not sports with a human face then?? Of all bad decisions by FIFA under Sepp Blatter's rule, this one must be amongst the top ranked.

An extra linesman behind the goals... Well, good intentions from FIFA, but I think they would have better chosen that "smart ball". That extra linesman is still not without mistakes. Let's face it, a human eye is never without failure and can never be as precise as the available technical aids. IMO football should adopt the ice hockey system where a sort of infra-red camera controls if the puck has completely crossed the goal line, giving a signal when the puck has crossed the line. This would be very easy to include in football as well, all you need is a small camera at the goal post and a chip inside the ball.

I understand why they dont want to use a system from hawkeye, as everyone can see how faulty the system is (at least in tennis). But why dont they want to use the microchip-system? I bet FIFAs just a bunch of conservative old men.

This is great news!

If you take away a supporter's possibility to complain on a referee's decision, you'll take away more than you imagine from soccer. A big mistake of the referee will be remembered for ages. It's tough if it doesn't benefit your team, but you have to love this part of soccer!

If we need a bunch of conservative old men to keep it this way, that's how I want FIFA to be!

What if your team gets eliminated out of the Champions League (including the loss of a lot of money) because of a wrongly disallowed goal? I wonder if the club's financial director will be so happy with that part of football... A little chip inside a ball would at lrast clearly show if the ball has crossed the goal line or not.

Even with this bit of technology introduced, we still have enough charming referee mistakes thanks to the offside rule
