Is Nicklas Bendtner the greatest striker in the world?
Dog noget ironisk. |

Dundalk FC investor Corey Woolfolk insists the club can follow in Rosenborg’s footsteps by earning themselves the upgrade of Oriel Park that most supporters crave.
(...)
The Norwegians have been cited as a blueprint for other teams who hope to build domestic dominance before making a breakthrough in Europe. Between 1995 and 2007, they made the group stages of the Champions League 11 times in 13 years.
This led to huge upgrade works on the Lerkandal Stadion, which many Dundalk fans visited last July. The stadium dates from 1947, but Rosenborg’s European successes allowed it to invest heavily in the facility, with the oldest of the stands dating from 1996 and three others built between 2000 and 2002.
Woolfolk said Dundalk could make similar progress, if they achieved on the field.
“I think there are ways in the long-term to build around the ground to improve the infrastructure, as the guys talked about.
“If you take Rosenborg and the people who went there and saw the facilities there, that wasn’t just built, that was earned. They earned that through their continued qualification in the Champions League and selling players and that kind of thing, so you have to crawl, walk and run.
“As far as the environment here goes, it’s great. I don’t see any reason to move and it would be great to fill it in a little bit.”

Irish Daily Mail:
LEAGUE OF IRELAND chief Fran Gavin has welcomed the takeover of Dundalk but would hate to see the club ‘do a Rosenborg’.
The Lilywhites were taken over by an American consortium, involving private equity firm Peak 6 who own a quarter of Premier League side Bournemouth.
Members of the consortium also have involvement with Swansea City and Italian giants Roma.

Rosenborg were Champions League group stage regulars from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s but turned Norwegian football into a one-horse race.
From 1992, they won the league for 13 years in a row and have done so another six times since 2006.
And Gavin said of the Rosenborg comparison:
“The people in Dundalk would think it was a great thing but you like to see a league where it’s competitive.
“Would you like to see a team running away with the league? Definitely not. You can see the effect it’s had in Scotland with Celtic.” |

“It might not come as a surprise that a Norwegian has merits in both football and winter sports,” writes Eivind Krohg, highlighting the illustrious multi-sporting career of Bjørn Wirkola.
“He carried Norway’s flag at the Grenoble ‘68 opening ceremony, and won both league and cup with Rosenborg (as top scorer) in 1971, as well as giving the name to the often-used Norwegian idiom ‘jumping after Wirkola’. Oh, and he is still the only ski jumper to have won the Four Hills Tournament three years in a row.”

Fifteen years ago, in Norway, fingernails were chewed in their thousands. Rosenborg had won the title 12 seasons in a row but Valerenga had got themselves back in the race with a 4-1 away win against the champions and kept pace until the final day. With both teams on 45 points and +15 goal difference, Rosenborg faced Lyn and Valerenga played Stabæk, both winnable home matches.

2004 - på Lerkendal: Rosenborg - Lyn 4-1
2019 - i The Guardian: Rosenborg - Rosenberg 5-2
The Guardian wrote: | The game ended in Trondheim but Rosenberg’s players could not yet toast another success – they had to huddle around a pitch-side screen to watch events in Oslo, where there were six minutes to play. They stared, mouths agape, as Valerenga’s Morten Berre went clean through, but the winger fluffed his lines and sidefooted the ball straight at Stabæk keeper Jon Knudsen. Cue bedlam at Rosenberg, who were champions again. |

On Tuesday night, teen Borussia Dortmund talent Gio Reyna bagged arguably one of the snazziest goals ever scored in Europe by an American, curling home a spectacular solo effort.
We're here to stoke that exact debate by listing our version of the best strikes by an American export after MLSsoccer.com's Matt Doyle started it.

No. 5: Mix Diskerud vs. Legia Warsaw (2012)
Rosenborg's gripping Europa League playoff round tussle with Legia Warsaw looked as if it was headed to extratime with the teams deadlocked at 2-2 on aggregate. Then, the hosts sent a long ball toward the Legia area that resulted in a weak looping clearance. Diskerud raced in to rocket a confident volley into the near side and earn a big continental win.

With “The Double” act in 71, Rosenborg would in the autumn of 1972 compete in the European Cup, and sensationally was drawn against Celtic. In September that year Bjørn Wirkola would write history, few have ever talked about or really acknowledged.
Kenny Dalglish and Lou Macari were in the start of their careers in football and young promising players at Celtic, both were in the line-up playing Rosenborg at Hampden Park. Few might have recognized or even known that on the opposite half was Bjørn Wirkola in the Rosenborg team.
The double ski jumping World Champion from Oslo in 1966, three times winner of the German / Austrian “Four Hill’s”, still no other has done this to date, and at this time the last man to win a competition in the same event, when going top at Bischofshofen. He was actually in a starting line-up in the European Cup against Celtic. Few might have thought about the event as anything special, with Celtic being huge favorites, but when Bjorn in the 55th minute scored the final goal of the game, and it all ended in a 2-1 win to Celtic, it was really surreal. Later Bjorn has made a joke about it, saying he has never played at Hampden Park without scoring, not many can say that, probably a special and rare group of players.
